The Alliance to the Scranton District Dental Society was formed in 1935 by 20 spouses of local dentists.  It was the second to be formed in the nation.  Throughout the years, the Alliance has been a voice of Dentistry in the community initiating such programs as distribution of toothbrushes to day care centers, class rooms, and institutions for children and adults; and donating funds to cancer research, Pennsylvania Association for the Blind, Boys and Girl’s Clubs, St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital and the American Red Cross.  During WWII, the Alliance wrapped surgical dressings for the war effort.  In 1966 the spouses collected usable instruments and small pieces of dental equipment from local dentists for the School of Dentistry in Thailand.  Beginning in 1970 and continuing through 1990, the Alliance awarded Scholarships to qualified students entering the Dental Hygiene Program at local colleges.  The Scranton Alliance became a member of the national Alliance to the American Dental Association which was formed in 1956.
